Parking is available, but please follow all guidelines to avoid fines or towing:
-
- Limited parking is available at the Joan Weill Student Center. Overflow parking is just a short walk away.
-
- Only use designated parking areas.
-
- Do not park in:
-
- Handicap spots without proper tags

-
- Reserved or Nurse parking zones
-
- Do not park in:
-
- The college actively monitors parking and will ticket or tow vehicles not in compliance — towing is at your own expense.
Help us stay in good standing with our host by parking responsibly!
Painting Locations
We’ll organize into two groups based on accessibility and terrain:
-
- Group A: Painting locations may involve hiking or climbing.
-
- Group B: Focuses on roadside-accessible spots with minimal walking required.
You’ll receive a map with painting locations, and you’re free to join a group or venture out on your own — this is your experience to shape.
We strongly encourage carpooling — it’s a great way to connect with fellow painters, make friends, and share the journey.
Music
Are you a musician? Bring your acoustic instrument!
Evening jam sessions are a beloved tradition, and you never know who else might show up ready to play.
Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just like to strum a few chords, we welcome you to join in — it’s all about fun, connection, and creativity.
Evening Painting — Portrait & Nocturne Sessions
We encourage you to take part in evening painting, including both portrait and nocturne sessions.
-
- We’ll provide a model light, and volunteers from the group will serve as portrait models.
-
- Portrait sessions are scheduled for later in the week — keep an ear out for announcements.
-
- For nocturnes and portrait work, bring your own easel light to ensure you can see your canvas clearly in low light.
It’s a great opportunity to try something new and stretch your creative muscles under different lighting conditions!
Clothing, Attire & Extras
The vibe for the week is comfortable and casual, both in spirit and in dress.
What to Wear & Bring:
-
- Casual, comfortable clothing suited for outdoor activities and painting.
-
- Sturdy footwear is essential — opt for shoes or boots suitable for long-distance walking and uneven terrain.
-
- If you anticipate navigating hilly or rocky areas, consider bringing a walking stick or hiking pole for extra support.
You’ll be outdoors a lot, so dress in layers, and check the local weather before packing to be prepared for anything from warm sun to cool mornings.
Local Insects & What to Bring
Unfortunately, even in the beautiful Adirondacks, ticks and biting insects can be a concern — especially in grassy or wooded areas. Here’s how to stay protected:
Tick Prevention Tips:
-
- Ticks are present in the area. We highly recommend wearing long pants tucked into socks and hiking shoes or boots.
-
- Treat clothing with permethrin for added protection. Learn how to apply it safely:
How to Use Permethrin on Clothing – Consumer Reports
- Treat clothing with permethrin for added protection. Learn how to apply it safely:
-
- After each outdoor session, check for ticks — especially behind knees, under arms, and along the waistline.
-
- If you find one, and especially if you see a red “bullseye” or target-shaped rash, visit Mountain Medical Clinic promptly. Early treatment is key to avoiding long-term issues.
Additional Bug Protection:
-
- Bring bug spray — natural or traditional repellents are both fine (your preference).
-
- Suggested natural options (not officially endorsed, just for reference):
-
- Qganics Mosquito Repellent Spray
-
- Repel Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Spray
-
- Medella Naturals Insect & Mosquito Repellent
-
- Suggested natural options (not officially endorsed, just for reference):
-
- Bring bug spray — natural or traditional repellents are both fine (your preference).
-
- Bug face nets, long sleeves, and long socks over pants help prevent bites from black flies and other pests.
-
- Ticks may be found not only in grass but can drop from trees, so avoid exposed skin when moving through wooded areas.
Other Issues to Be Aware Of
Your safety is a top priority — please take the following precautions seriously:
-
- Footwear Matters: You’ll be walking and occasionally hiking over uneven terrain. We strongly recommend hiking boots with good tread and ankle support. High boots also help reduce the risk of tick bites.
-
- Terrain Hazards: Some painting locations include steep ravines, slippery rocks, wet grass, and uneven ground. Use good judgment and do not risk injury — no painting is worth a fall.
-
- Upon arrival, you will be required to sign a waiver. Please note: Streamline is not liable for any injuries or fatalities. Participation is at your own risk.
Low-Impact Painting Option:
-
- We offer a low-impact group (Group B) for those who prefer roadside painting.
-
- If painting roadside:
-
- Pull completely off the road in designated areas.
-
- Be mindful of high-speed traffic.
-
- Paint away from your vehicle to minimize risk in case of a collision.
-
- Always use common sense and stay alert.
-
- If painting roadside:
Wildlife Awareness:
-
- Bears are rare, but not impossible. They typically avoid people, especially in noisy groups.
-
- If painting in wooded or isolated areas:
-
- Travel in pairs and make occasional noise to deter wildlife.
-
- To date, we’ve never had a bear encounter, but it’s wise to stay aware.
-
- If painting in wooded or isolated areas:
Accessibility Note:
-
- If you have limited mobility, please assess your ability to navigate outdoor environments.
-
- This event involves moderate physical activity, and participation is solely at your discretion.

Having a Car Will Be Necessary
Please note: We will not be providing transportation during the event.
-
- While many attendees do bring vehicles and are happy to offer rides, it’s best to arrange transportation in advance.
-
- To start coordinating, join the private Facebook group and connect with fellow attendees — it’s a great way to break the ice and plan ahead.
Suggested Post Example:
“Hey, everyone! Excited to connect with fellow attendees here. I’m looking forward to the event and would love to start making arrangements. Who else is attending and interested in carpooling? Let’s start planning together!”
Daily Travel:
We drive to different painting locations each day. Please remember to respect accessible parking spaces — use them only if you are legally permitted to do so.
Painting Behavior: Treat Your Neighbor as Yourself
At the Publisher’s Invitational, everyone is equal, regardless of fame, experience, or recognition.
-
- No divas, no egos, no groupies. We’re all here to learn, paint, and enjoy each other’s company.
-
- Eric detests drama—please help keep the atmosphere relaxed, friendly, and inclusive.
-
- Be mindful not to monopolize anyone’s time. Introduce yourself, make friends — but be respectful of space and focus.
-
- While painting, please “read the room” (or the woods!) — most artists prefer quiet concentration while working.
-
- We encourage you to step outside your comfort zone! Try:
-
- Nocturnes
-
- Sunsets and sunrises
-
- Early mornings
-
- New techniques or styles
-
- We encourage you to step outside your comfort zone! Try:
-
- Aim to complete as many paintings as you can each day — it’s about growth, exploration, and practice.
A quick note on documentation:
You’ll receive event stickers to place on the back of each painting created during the week. These can be valuable for historical reference and provenance — please use them!

Admire and Learn
One of the greatest gifts of the Publisher’s Invitational is the opportunity to learn by watching and grow by doing.
-
- Take time to observe others as they paint — notice their technique, composition, brushwork, and color choices.
-
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions — this is a community that loves to share.
-
- Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned pro, every painter has something to offer — and something to gain.
-
- Sometimes, just standing back and watching someone else work can spark a breakthrough in your own art.
This week is all about mutual inspiration, shared experiences, and supportive learning. Be open, curious, and ready to soak it all in!
Closing Party – Friday Night, June 13
Join us for a fun and relaxed Closing Party at around 7:30 PM, following dinner.
-
- Location: To Be Determined
-
- Attire: Casual is perfect — come as you are and ready to celebrate!
A Note About Unregistered Guests
Please do not invite or encourage unregistered guests to attend the party — or any part of the event. We understand the temptation, but here’s why it’s important:
-
- Extra charges: The college tracks attendance closely (often using a headcount) and charges us per person — even for those who “just drop by.”
-
- No access: Unregistered individuals will not receive a badge, meals, or access to painting or social activities.
-
- Room sharing: Please don’t invite friends to stay with you unless they are officially registered.
-
- Fairness matters: Everyone attending has invested in this experience. Allowing unauthorized guests undermines that.
-
- No drama zone: Please don’t put Eric or Skye in the tough spot of having to turn someone away. You know Eric’s stance on drama — let’s keep things smooth, fun, and respectful for all.
Thanks for helping us maintain the integrity and quality of this special event!
Mobile Phones & WiFi
Please be aware that cell service is limited in the Adirondacks region.
-
- Verizon is currently the only carrier with reliable coverage in the Paul Smith’s College area.
-
- Many of the painting locations we’ll visit are in remote wilderness areas, with no signal for miles.
-
- WiFi is available in the dorms and the main building on campus.
We recommend downloading GPS directions, maps, or reference materials ahead of time and preparing for limited mobile communication during the event.
Dorm Room Preparation
This is CAMP—so if you crave comfort, bring your own creature comforts!
A good night’s sleep and solid self-care lead to better painting days, so plan ahead to feel your best.
What to Bring:
-
- Toiletries: Shampoo, soap, and other essentials are not provided — please bring your own.
-
- Towels: Thin bath towels are provided, but you may prefer your own plush towel and washcloth.
-
- Bathrobe: Recommended, as you’ll be sharing a suite.
-
- Bedding Comforts: Bring your favorite pillow, extra blankets, or even a mattress topper if you’re picky about sleep quality.
-
- Climate Control:
-
- Flying in? Use vacuum storage bags to save space when packing bulky items.
-
- Driving? Consider bringing a small space heater or fan, depending on the forecast.
-
- Climate Control:
-
- Key Tip: A lanyard for your room key is a smart idea — misplaced keys will result in a charge.
Weather & Clothing
Expect the unexpected — the Adirondacks are known for their natural beauty and their unpredictable weather!
-
- Past events have included chilly mornings, scorching afternoons, sudden downpours, and plenty of bug activity.
-
- We paint in all conditions, so come prepared for anything nature throws our way.
What to Bring:
-
- For wet weather: Raincoat with a hood (or a waterproof hat), waterproof boots, and layers to stay warm and dry.
-
- For dry but cool mornings/evenings: A warm coat or jacket.
-
- Every day: Layered clothing you can adjust as the temperature changes throughout the day.
In Case of Rain:
-
- If it’s light rain, we typically keep painting outdoors.
-
- If the weather turns worse, we may pivot to an impromptu indoor demo, portrait session, or still life setup.
Alcohol Policy
You’re welcome to enjoy your own beverages in your dorm, but please note:
-
- Open containers are not allowed in public areas on campus — this is a strict campus policy with no exceptions.
-
- Please do not consume alcohol before engaging in any potentially hazardous activities, such as canoeing or driving. Your safety — and the safety of others — is our top priority.
A cash-only evening bar will be available each night for socializing, music, and winding down — join us there for a relaxed, responsible gathering.
Paint & Turpentine Guidelines
Please bring your own paint and supplies. We will provide a limited amount of solvent — first come, first served.
Use odorless mineral spirits (OMS) only. Strong-smelling solvents are not allowed indoors or in shared spaces due to sensitivity concerns.
-
- Do not dump turpentine or paint water in sinks, on the ground, or anywhere on campus. Dispose of waste properly — we will provide a container for used solvent.
-
- Be mindful when cleaning brushes in shared living spaces. Spills or residue may result in cleaning fees.
Let’s keep our workspaces clean, safe, and respectful for all!
